Adelaide City Council Kicks Off Golden Wattle Park Revitalisation

The Adelaide City Council has officially confirmed the commencement of a major infrastructure project today, Wednesday, 8 April 2026, marking the start of a significant new building program across the city’s iconic Park Lands. Construction is set to begin on the new community sporting facility at Golden Wattle Park / Mirnu Wirra (Park 21W) on Goodwood Road. The project is being delivered in collaboration with the Adelaide Community Sports and Recreation Association (ACSARA).

The multi-million-dollar development replaces a structure dating back to the 1960s. The new facility is designed to meet modern standards for the hundreds of athletes who use the area for Aussie rules, cricket, soccer, and school sports. Key features of the new build include:

  • Six high-standard unisex change rooms to support diverse participation.
  • A modern commercial kitchen and common community area.
  • Sheltered outdoor spectator spaces and public toilets.
  • Sustainability-focused architecture featuring natural light and cool-roof technology.

Lord Mayor Dr Jane Lomax-Smith addressed the media today, stating that this project represents the culmination of a long-term investigation into the future of community assets within the Park Lands. She emphasized that providing modern recreational amenities is essential as Adelaide’s residential population continues to expand.

State Government Environmental and Infrastructure Actions

Beyond the city council, the South Australian Government has also initiated a scheduled environmental operation today. The Department for Environment and Water has commenced the lowering of the Lock 5 weir pool on the River Murray. This critical maintenance and environmental management task will see the water level reduced at a rate of 2.5 cm per day. The operation is part of a broader strategy to maintain flow connectivity and manage the long-term health of the river system, which remains a vital resource for the Greater Adelaide region.

Judicial and Regulatory Activity

In the judicial sector, a high-profile case is scheduled for the Elizabeth Magistrates Court today. A woman arrested as part of a nationally coordinated crackdown on illicit tobacco and vaping networks is expected to make her first appearance. The case follows a significant operation by the National Disruption Group and SA Police, which recently resulted in the closure of multiple retail outlets across northern Adelaide. This court session marks a key step in the government's ongoing effort to dismantle criminal networks impacting the city's commercial and public health sectors.
