Public Health Alerts: Seasonal Vigilance Required

SA Health has maintained high-priority advisories for the metropolitan area following confirmed notifications of communicable diseases this month. Residents are urged to remain vigilant for symptoms of measles, following recent cases identified in the community. Symptoms typically include fever, cough, runny nose, and a characteristic blotchy rash. Authorities recommend that any individual not fully vaccinated with two doses of the MMR vaccine contact their healthcare provider to discuss immunization.

Furthermore, a health alert remains active regarding invasive meningococcal disease (serotype B). Parents and caregivers should monitor for signs such as high fever, headache, neck stiffness, and a distinctive red or purple skin rash that does not fade under pressure. Additionally, the 2026 Seasonal Influenza program is now fully operational across South Australia. This year’s program includes a needle-free intranasal vaccine option for children aged 2 to 17, available at participating GPs and respiratory clinics.

Traffic and Transport: AFL and Fringe Finale

The City of Adelaide advises of significant road closures and traffic diversions on Sunday, 22 March, to accommodate the AFL Round 2 fixture at Adelaide Oval and the final night of the Adelaide Fringe festival season. Commuters should expect delays and plan alternative routes through the CBD and North Adelaide.

  • Adelaide Oval Precinct: From 5:00 pm to 7:15 pm, major closures will affect North Terrace (between Victoria Street and King William Road), King William Road (between North Terrace and Pennington Terrace), and Sir Edwin Smith Avenue. War Memorial Drive will also be restricted to facilitate safe pedestrian movement.
  • East End Unleashed: Marking the final day of the 2026 Fringe, Rundle Street, East Terrace, and Rundle Road will be closed to all unauthorized vehicles from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm. Bus detours will be in effect for services usually operating via Grenfell and Rundle Streets; passengers are advised to use the Botanic Gardens tram stop as an alternative.
  • Public Transport: Footy Express services will operate for the Port Adelaide home game. Travel is free for all AFL game-day ticket holders. Please note that Stop 6A Sir Donald Bradman Drive remains closed for infrastructure works.

Civic Services and Safety Notices

Following the South Australian State Election held on Saturday, 21 March, the state remains in the formal caretaker period. While all essential municipal services, including waste collection and emergency maintenance, continue as scheduled, major policy decisions and new community grants are currently deferred. The City of Adelaide also reminds residents that 2026 Recycling and Waste calendars are available for digital download via the council portal.

In the interest of public safety, SafeWork SA has issued a notification for a pyrotechnic display at Adelaide Oval between 2:15 pm and 3:15 pm during the afternoon AFL match. Local residents may notice increased noise levels in the North Adelaide area during this window. Finally, the annual Adelaide Melanoma March will take place this morning at Henley Square from 8:00 am to 11:00 am, involving minor pedestrian diversions along the coastal path toward Grange.
