Overview of Saturday Commute

Adelaide is set for a high-traffic Saturday as the 2026 festival season reaches its penultimate day. With the Adelaide Fringe and various community events concluding this weekend, commuters should expect significant road closures in the CBD and East End. Additionally, recent major infrastructure shifts on South Road continue to impact travel times for those moving through the western suburbs. Planning ahead and utilizing public transport is highly recommended for anyone heading into the city today.

Hutt Street and Halifax Street Closures

One of the most notable disruptions today is the 'Fringe Vibes on Hutt Street' event. To facilitate this community celebration, Halifax Street will be fully closed to all vehicular traffic between Corryton Street and Hutt Street. This closure is effective from 5:00 AM on Saturday, March 21, and is expected to remain in place throughout the evening. Local detours will be active, and motorists are advised to use Angas Street or Carrington Street as alternative east-west routes.

East End Unleashed and CBD Restrictions

As part of the final Saturday for the East End Unleashed program, extensive road closures will begin in the late afternoon to accommodate large pedestrian crowds. Starting from 5:00 PM, the following roads will be closed until approximately midnight:

  • Rundle Street (between Frome Street and East Terrace)
  • East Terrace (between Rundle Road and Grenfell Street)
  • Rundle Road, Union Street, and Ebenezer Place
  • Vaughan Place and Vardon Avenue
  • Frome Street (between Tavistock Lane and Sym Choon Lane)

The Ebenezer Night Markets will also be holding their final session of the season, further increasing foot traffic in the Laneway districts. Hyde Street also remains closed between Stockley Alley and Pirie Street for the Rhino Room Fringe Street Party.

South Road and T2D Project Updates

In the western suburbs, commuters are reminded that the new South Road alignment in Torrensville is now fully operational. Northbound traffic is currently shifted onto newly constructed lanes near the Brickworks Marketplace as part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project. Drivers should be aware of permanent turning restrictions: there is no right turn permitted from South Road into West Thebarton Road. Furthermore, heavy vehicles exceeding 8.8 meters are prohibited from turning right from West Thebarton Road at any time, with detours directed via Port Road.

Public Transport and Special Events

Adelaide Metro has confirmed that several bus routes will detour to avoid the East End closure zone starting from 5:00 PM. Impacted services include routes 98A, 98C, 99A, 99C, 140, 141, 142, and 144. Passengers should look for temporary stop locations on Grenfell Street and Botanic Road. For those attending the SummerSalt festival today, extra capacity has been noted for regional and metropolitan services, though no specific shuttle has been announced for this date. Trams are currently running on a full schedule with no reported maintenance delays.
