Free Travel for Closing the Gap Day and Major South Road Alignment Shifts This Thursday

Adelaide Traffic and Commute Update: Thursday, 19 March 2026
Commuters across Adelaide should prepare for a busy Thursday as the city balances major infrastructure projects, the final week of the festival season, and a significant community event at the Adelaide Showgrounds. Today marks Closing the Gap Day, which brings both increased activity around Wayville and a unique benefit for public transport users.
Public Transport: Free Travel and Key Disruptions
In recognition of Closing the Gap Day, Adelaide Metro is offering FREE travel on all buses, trains, and trams for event-goers with a valid ticket. This offer is available between 8:30 am and 5:00 pm today. If you are heading to the Showgrounds for the event (running 10:00 am to 3:00 pm), use the following key access points:
- Train: Adelaide Showgrounds Railway Station.
- Tram: Stop 3 Goodwood Road.
- Bus: Stop 2 Goodwood Road.
Beyond the event, several service disruptions remain in effect. A significant stop change begins today at Stop 7 Ashley Street (North Side), affecting routes 286, 287, and 288 until the end of the month. Additionally, commuters using Morphett Street should note that Stop F1 (East Side) remains closed for maintenance, and detours continue for routes 248 and 248A near the intersection of Anzac Highway and South Road.
Major Arterial Alert: South Road Alignment
Motorists navigating the North-South Corridor must stay alert to the permanent traffic alignment recently implemented in Torrensville. Between Ashley Street and West Thebarton Road, traffic has shifted onto newly constructed lanes as part of the T2D Project. Note the following critical restrictions during today's peak hours:
- No Right Turns: Right turns are prohibited from West Thebarton Road or Ashwin Parade onto South Road during peak periods (7:00 am – 10:00 am and 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm).
- Northbound Restriction: Northbound motorists on South Road can no longer turn right into West Thebarton Road at any time.
Roadworks and Regional Conditions
On Greenhill Road in Burnside, resurfacing works continue. While major closures are restricted to night hours, daytime commuters should expect speed reductions and lane merging between St Albans Drive and the Greenhill Summit Track. In the hills, Torrens Valley Road may see intermittent delays between Cuddlee Creek and Gumeracha due to localized maintenance.
For those planning long-distance travel, transport authorities are reassessing several outback routes today, including the Birdsville Track and roads near Frome Creek, following previous rainfall damage. Motorists are urged to check conditions before heading north of Port Augusta.
