Official Notice: Road Closures for AFL Round 2 and Festival Season

The City of Adelaide advises residents and commuters of significant traffic restrictions in place for Friday, 20 March 2026, to accommodate major sporting events at Adelaide Oval and the final week of the Adelaide Fringe. Motorists should plan alternative routes and allow for additional travel time throughout the CBD and North Adelaide.

  • Adelaide Oval Precinct: To facilitate safe pedestrian access for AFL Round 2, War Memorial Drive will be closed between the Riverbank Footbridge and King William Road from 3:30 pm to 11:30 pm. Additionally, several northbound lanes on King William Road and Pennington Terrace will experience rolling closures between 9:25 pm and 11:30 pm following the conclusion of the match.
  • East End Unleashed: Rundle Street, East Terrace, and Rundle Road remain closed to all unauthorized vehicles from 5:00 pm to midnight. These closures support the high pedestrian volumes associated with ‘The Garden of Unearthly Delights’ and ‘Gluttony’ festival hubs.
  • Fringe Street Parties: Hyde Street, between Stockley Alley and Pirie Street, remains restricted for the Rhino Room’s Fringe Street Party until early Saturday morning.

Public Health Advisory: Communicable Disease Vigilance

SA Health has issued a high-priority alert for the metropolitan area following confirmed notifications of communicable diseases. Residents are urged to maintain vigilance regarding the following:

  • Measles Alert: Following three confirmed cases earlier this month, health authorities recommend that individuals who have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine contact their healthcare provider. Symptoms include fever, cough, and a characteristic blotchy rash.
  • Meningococcal Disease: A recent case of invasive meningococcal disease (serotype B) has prompted a reminder for parents and caregivers to monitor for high fever, headache, neck stiffness, or a distinctive red-purple rash.
  • 2026 Seasonal Influenza: The state-wide immunization program is now active. This year features the introduction of the intranasally administered vaccine for children aged 2 to 17, available at participating clinics and GPs.

Civic Announcements and Planning

The City of Adelaide confirms that it is currently operating under the caretaker period in accordance with the 2026 South Australian State Election, scheduled for tomorrow, Saturday, 21 March. While essential municipal services continue, major policy decisions are deferred until the conclusion of the election.

In community news, the Council has formally supported the renaming of a section of Queen Street to Sister Janet Mead Street, in honor of the late musician and founder of the Adelaide Day Centre for Homeless Persons. A formal consultation process with local residents and businesses regarding the updating of address records will commence shortly.

Park Lands and Environment

Post-event restoration continues in Botanic Park following recent major festivities. While Plane Tree Drive has largely reopened, localized access restrictions remain in place near Speakers Corner to facilitate turf recovery and garden bed maintenance. Public cooperation is requested to ensure the long-term health of these heritage spaces.
