Overview of Saturday Commute

As the 'Mad March' festival season reaches its peak, Adelaide commuters should prepare for significant traffic changes and road closures this Saturday, 14 March 2026. With the Adelaide Fringe and Adelaide Festival in full swing, the East End and the CBD will see high pedestrian volumes and scheduled road closures. Additionally, major infrastructure projects, including the North-South Corridor (T2D), continue to reshape arterial routes, requiring drivers to adapt to recent alignment shifts and turning restrictions.

East End Unleashed: Fringe Road Closures

To accommodate the large crowds attending the Adelaide Fringe, several key streets in the East End will be closed to all vehicular traffic on Saturday afternoon and evening. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes around the following areas:

  • From 4:00 PM: Rundle Street (between Frome Street and East Terrace), Bent Street, Vardon Avenue, Ebenezer Place, and Union Street will be fully closed to vehicles.
  • From 5:00 PM: Closures will extend to include Frome Street (between Tavistock Lane and Sym Choon Lane), East Terrace, and Rundle Road.

These roads are expected to remain closed until 1:00 AM on Sunday morning. South Australia Police will be conducting high-visibility patrols in these 'Declared Public Precincts' to ensure pedestrian safety and manage the increased foot traffic.

Major Arterial Updates: South Road T2D Project

Following the successful implementation of a major traffic switch in Torrensville earlier this month, drivers are reminded that South Road is now operating on a new alignment between Ashley Street and the intersection of Ashwin Parade and West Thebarton Road. While the two northbound lanes remain operational, they now curve slightly to the west near the Brickworks Marketplace.

Critically, the following permanent restrictions are now in place to facilitate ongoing construction of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) launch box:

  • No Right Turn: Northbound motorists on South Road are no longer permitted to turn right into West Thebarton Road at any time.
  • Gallipoli Underpass: Work continues on the off-ramp between Anzac Highway and Eurilpa Avenue. The ramp is currently reduced to a single lane, which may cause minor delays during peak Saturday shopping hours.

Public Transport Alerts

Adelaide Metro has confirmed several service disruptions and detours for Saturday, 14 March 2026:

  • East End Detours: From 5:00 PM, bus routes 98A, 98C, 99A, 99C, 140, 141, 142, and 144 will detour away from Rundle Road and East Terrace. Commuters should check for temporary stop locations on Grenfell Street and Botanic Road.
  • Seacombe Road Closure: Essential works at the intersection of Miller Street and Seacombe Road will result in detours for routes 200 and 200B throughout Saturday.
  • Salisbury Area: Church Street in Salisbury remains closed for infrastructure upgrades, affecting multiple local bus connections.

Commuters are encouraged to utilize the ADLOOP tram service for travel within the CBD and allow an additional 15-20 minutes for cross-city travel due to the heightened festival activity.
