Festival Season Peaks: Major CBD Road Closures

Adelaide commuters and residents should prepare for significant traffic disruptions this Sunday, 8 March 2026, as the city reaches the height of the 'Mad March' festival season. With WOMADelaide in full swing at Botanic Park and the Adelaide Fringe continuing to draw massive crowds to the East End, several major arteries will be closed to all vehicle traffic. These closures are compounded by the upcoming Adelaide Cup public holiday, which typically increases city traffic on Sunday evening.

  • Botanic Park & North Terrace: Plane Tree Drive, Frome Park, and Speakers Corner remain closed to all vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians to facilitate WOMADelaide 2026. Additionally, the first two rows of the State Herbarium car park on Hackney Road are reserved for accessible parking.
  • East End Unleashed: Extensive closures are in place for the Adelaide Fringe. Impacted roads include Rundle Street (between Frome Street and East Terrace), Rundle Road, Bent Street, Ebenezer Place, and Vardon Avenue. Due to the holiday eve, these roads will remain closed until 1:00 AM on Monday morning.
  • Victoria Square / Tarntanyangga: Expect localized restrictions and heavy pedestrian activity surrounding the Adelaide Festival hubs.

Public Transport: Shuttles and Service Detours

Adelaide Metro has implemented several service adjustments to help manage the influx of visitors. While the tram network is currently fully operational, commuters should be aware of the following bus detours and rail updates:

  • WOMADelaide Shuttle: A dedicated bus shuttle is operating between the CBD and Botanic Park. Passengers are encouraged to use the 'BTANIC' line for direct access.
  • West Thebarton Detours: Roadworks on West Thebarton Road and Phillips Street have forced detours for bus routes 286, 287, and 288, effective through Tuesday.
  • Northern Suburbs: Ongoing construction on Craigmore Road, Blakeview, continues to affect routes 442, 443, and 471, while Yatala Vale Road works impact route 542.
  • Rail Alerts: Commuters on the Outer Harbor, Grange, and Port Dock lines should anticipate minor 'ongoing' delays due to signal maintenance and network pressure.

Major Arteries and Regional Roadworks

While the focus remains on the CBD, major infrastructure projects continue to affect travel times on primary corridors. The North-South Corridor (T2D) project has active construction zones in the Southern Precinct near Clovelly Park, though major rolling closures on South Road are not scheduled for this specific Sunday daytime. In the south, the recently duplicated Main South Road between Aldinga and Sellicks Beach is fully open, but motorists should watch for intermittent speed restrictions as landscaping and finishing works are finalized. Drivers are advised to allow at least 20 extra minutes for journeys passing through the city and to consider using the O-Bahn or tram to avoid parking congestion in the East End.
