Commuter Alert: South Road Traffic Switch and Norwood Bus Disruptions

Wednesday Traffic and Commute Update: March 11, 2026
Good morning, Adelaide. Commuters are advised to prepare for significant changes to major arterial routes this morning, particularly in the western and eastern suburbs. Following the March long weekend works, several long-term infrastructure adjustments have officially come into effect today, Wednesday, March 11. Please allow extra travel time for your morning and afternoon journeys.
Major Roadwork Update: South Road Alignment
The biggest shift for motorists today is the new traffic alignment on South Road in Torrensville as part of the River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project. Northbound traffic on South Road between Ashley Street and Ashwin Parade has been moved onto a newly constructed alignment near the Brickworks Marketplace. While the number of lanes remains the same, the lane positions and line markings have changed.
- Turning Restrictions: Motorists cannot make a right turn onto South Road from West Thebarton Road or Ashwin Parade during peak periods (7:00 am to 10:00 am and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm).
- Heavy Vehicle Restrictions: Vehicles over 8.8 metres are permanently restricted from turning right from West Thebarton Road, with detours in place via Port Road.
- No Right Turn: Motorists traveling north on South Road are no longer permitted to turn right onto West Thebarton Road.
Public Transport and Bus Service Alerts
Adelaide Metro has several active service disruptions today that will impact bus commuters across multiple regions. Most notably, stop closures in Norwood and Torrensville are likely to cause delays for those heading toward the CBD.
- Norwood: Stop closures on Portrush Road are in effect today and tomorrow. This impacts routes 300, 630, 922, 963, and 992. Commuters should check for the nearest temporary boarding point.
- Torrensville Detours: Bus routes 286, 287, and 288 are currently detouring due to the ongoing T2D works at the intersection of South Road and West Thebarton Road.
- Blakeview/Craigmore: Stop closures and detours remain in place on Craigmore Road, affecting routes 442, 443, and 471.
- Fairview Park: Ongoing works on Yatala Vale Road continue to impact routes 542, 542X, and 929 with significant stop closures in the area.
Commuter Advice
While tram and train services are currently operating on their standard Wednesday schedules, the changes to the South Road corridor are expected to cause minor 'teething' delays as drivers adjust to the new layout. We recommend utilizing the Adelaide Metro real-time arrival app to monitor your bus status and following all on-site signage in construction zones. Drive safely and maintain awareness of the new line markings through Torrensville.
