Wednesday Traffic Outlook: City and Suburban Alerts

Commuters across Adelaide should prepare for several localized disruptions this Wednesday, 4 March 2026. While major arterial traffic remains steady, specific roadworks and event-based closures in the CBD and northern suburbs are expected to impact travel times during the morning and afternoon peaks. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, particularly those navigating the city center and the Adelaide Hills corridor.

Major Arterial and Roadwork Disruptions

Several significant infrastructure projects continue to affect traffic flow across the metropolitan area:

  • South Road: The bus stop closure at Stop 7 South Road (East side) remains in effect through today, Wednesday, 4 March. Commuters using services such as the 721 should check for nearby temporary boarding points.
  • Adelaide Hills & South Eastern Freeway: Major interchange upgrades at Mount Barker and Verdun are ongoing. While night works typically conclude by 6:00 am, speed restrictions remain in place throughout the day. Residents in Cuddlee Creek and Gumeracha should note that Torrens Valley Road is subject to night closures until 6:00 am, which may affect early morning regional commuters.
  • Athelstone & Northern Suburbs: Gorge Road is undergoing embankment rectification works between Clement Road and King George Avenue. Expect intermittent lane closures and localized delays. Additionally, Henderson Avenue in Pooraka and Woodford Road in Elizabeth North remain closed for essential works through the end of the week.
  • Main South Road: Following the completion of the Stage 2 duplication between Aldinga and Sellicks Beach, finishing works including landscaping and minor detailing continue. Motorists should be alert for temporary traffic controls and intermittent activity near the road corridor.

City Center and Event Impacts

The CBD continues to experience high activity due to the ongoing festival season and academic events:

  • Hindley Street: Today marks the final day of road closures for the UniSA graduation ceremonies. Hindley Street remains restricted, and pedestrians are advised to take extra care in the area.
  • Festival Season: While major weekend closures for East End Unleashed are not active on Wednesdays, temporary passenger loading zones and taxi ranks remain modified around East Terrace and Rundle Road to accommodate Fringe visitors.
  • Upcoming Alert: Commuters are advised that significant closures around Adelaide Oval and King William Road will begin tomorrow, Thursday, 5 March, for the Ed Sheeran concert.

Public Transport & Commuter Services

Adelaide Metro reports that all tram lines, including the Glenelg and Botanic Gardens routes, are operating on a full schedule. However, bus users should be aware of the following:

  • Bus Detours: Route 542 and 542X are currently detouring away from Yatala Vale Road in Fairview Park due to long-term roadworks. Routes 565 and 566 are also affected by the Henderson Avenue closure in Pooraka.
  • Station Upgrades: Passengers at Adelaide Railway Station can now utilize new smart gates. Tap and Pay options are fully operational across all trains, trams, and buses, following the retirement of paper MetroTickets last month.

Commuters are advised to allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes of travel time when passing through active work zones in Pooraka, Elizabeth North, and the Adelaide Hills.
