Major Evening Delays Expected for Adelaide Oval and Hindmarsh; Tram Network Shutdown Continues

Commuter Overview for Friday, 3 April 2026
Adelaide commuters should prepare for a split Friday on the roads. While the morning peak is expected to flow relatively normally, significant disruptions are forecast for the afternoon and evening due to a combination of professional sporting events, major infrastructure works, and a total shutdown of the tram network. Commuters heading into the CBD for work or leisure should consider alternative travel arrangements or allow at least 20 to 30 minutes of additional travel time after 3:00 PM.
Public Transport: Tram Network Closure
The most significant impact on public transport today is the continued full closure of the Adelaide tram network. As part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects, all tram services remain suspended across the entire line, from Glenelg to the Entertainment Centre and Botanic Gardens. This closure is scheduled to last until Monday evening. Passengers must use substitute bus services, which are running at a 10-minute frequency during the day and 15-to-20-minute intervals in the evening. Please note that travel times via substitute buses will be longer than usual, especially during peak hours.
Major Evening Road Closures
Multiple road closures will take effect this evening to facilitate large crowds for AFL and A-League matches:
- Adelaide Oval (AFL): War Memorial Drive will be closed between the Riverbank Footbridge and King William Road from 3:00 PM until 11:00 PM for the Adelaide Crows vs Fremantle match. More intensive closures follow the final siren; from 9:00 PM, King William Road will be closed between North Terrace and Pennington Terrace, and King William Street (northbound) will be closed from Currie Street.
- North Terrace: Expect significant delays near the railway station. Both eastbound and westbound lanes of North Terrace between Pulteney Street and Victoria Street will experience rolling closures from 9:10 PM to 11:00 PM.
- Hindmarsh (A-League): To accommodate soccer fans at Coopers Stadium, Manton Street in Hindmarsh will be closed from 8:30 PM. Diversions will be in place for bus routes 117 and 118.
Ongoing Arterial Roadworks
Outside of the CBD, major projects continue to restrict flow on key corridors:
- South Road (T2D Project): Permanent restrictions remain in place in Torrensville. Motorists are reminded that no right turns are permitted from Ashwin Parade or West Thebarton Road onto South Road during the afternoon peak (2:00 PM to 6:00 PM).
- Marion Road & Anzac Highway: Utility upgrades at this major intersection continue to cause lane restrictions and stop closures for several bus routes, including the M44 and 248.
- North Adelaide: Hill Street and Strangways Terrace remain restricted for local infrastructure improvements, impacting north-bound traffic into the late evening.
