New South Road Navigation and Significant Bus Detours: Monday Traffic Update

Critical Navigation Changes on South Road
As the work week begins this Monday, 23 March 2026, the most significant impact for Adelaide commuters remains the updated traffic alignment on South Road in Torrensville. Part of the ongoing River Torrens to Darlington (T2D) Project, the section of South Road between Ashley Street and the intersection of Ashwin Parade and West Thebarton Road is now operating on a new permanent alignment. Northbound traffic is flowing on newly constructed lanes, which requires motorists to be vigilant regarding several permanent turning restrictions.
Commuters are reminded that there are now strictly no right turns permitted from West Thebarton Road or Ashwin Parade onto South Road during the morning and afternoon peak periods (7:00 am to 10:00 am and 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm). Additionally, northbound motorists on South Road are permanently prohibited from making a right turn into West Thebarton Road at any time. These measures are designed to maintain traffic flow through the construction zone and minimize the risk of congestion-related incidents.
Arterial Roadworks: Greenhill and Torrens Valley Roads
Major infrastructure maintenance continues to affect key corridors in the foothills and hills regions. On Greenhill Road in Burnside, resurfacing works between St Albans Drive and the Greenhill Summit Track are currently in progress. While the most disruptive asphalt work is scheduled for night hours, daytime commuters should expect speed reductions to 40km/h and occasional lane merges as crews prepare the site for evening activities.
In the Adelaide Hills, Torrens Valley Road remains under local traffic management between Cuddlee Creek and Gumeracha. Intermittent day works are scheduled between 9:00 am and 4:00 pm, involving heavy machinery and localized speed restrictions. Drivers heading toward the Barossa or hills townships should allow an extra 10 to 15 minutes of travel time to account for these delays.
Public Transport: Bus Detours and Stop Closures
Adelaide Metro has issued several alerts for Monday commuters as service upgrades and infrastructure projects impact multiple bus routes. Notable disruptions include:
- Sir Donald Bradman Drive: Stop 6A (North side) is currently closed for maintenance and is not expected to reopen until late this week. Passengers for routes 163, J1, and J2 should use Stop 6 or Stop 7 as alternatives.
- Ashley Street: Stop 7 (North side) has been temporarily relocated to facilitate local works, affecting routes 286, 287, and 288.
- South Road & Anzac Highway: Significant detours remain in place for routes 248 and 248A due to utility relocations at the Gallipoli Underpass. Commuters in the Glandore and Plympton areas should check real-time data as several stops along these routes are being bypassed.
- Craigmore Road: Staged upgrades in the northern suburbs continue to impact routes 443 and 471, with local detours shifting passengers to alternative boarding points on Adams Road.
While the major city-center road closures associated with the festival season have now been lifted, commuters are advised to remain cautious of minor lingering cleanup works near the East End and Botanic Gardens precincts throughout the morning.
