Public Notice: Post-Holiday Service Updates and Festival Season Advisories

Community Notice: Post-Holiday Transitions
Following the conclusion of the Adelaide Cup long weekend, the City of Adelaide is notifying residents and visitors of the ongoing activities and public service adjustments active for Tuesday, 10 March 2026. While the public holiday period has concluded and the work week resumes, the city remains at the peak of the “Mad March” festival season, necessitating continued awareness of local restrictions and safety advisories.
Health Advisory: Marine Algal Bloom Monitoring
SA Health has issued a standing advisory regarding a naturally occurring marine algal bloom currently affecting segments of the South Australian coastline. Recent environmental testing has identified Karenia cristata as a dominant species within the bloom. This specific organism produces brevetoxins, which are responsible for neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP). The following precautions are recommended for all beachgoers and coastal residents:
- Water Contact: Avoid swimming in or coming into contact with abnormally foamy or discoloured water. This can cause skin and respiratory irritation, particularly for individuals with pre-existing conditions like asthma or bronchitis.
- Shellfish Consumption: Residents are urged not to harvest or consume wild shellfish—including oysters, mussels, scallops, and cockles—from affected areas, as they can accumulate toxins to dangerous levels.
- Symptom Awareness: Symptoms of NSP can include vomiting, stomach cramps, tingling around the mouth or extremities, and muscle pain. Seek medical advice if symptoms occur after coastal exposure.
Traffic and Road Access: Festival Precincts
While temporary weekend road closures for the “East End Unleashed” program have been lifted for the Tuesday commute, several major infrastructure and parkland closures remain in effect to support the Adelaide Fringe and Adelaide Festival. Citizens should plan for the following impacts:
- Rundle Road and East Terrace: Full road and path closures remain active 24/7 around Rundle Park (Kadlitpina) and Rymill Park (Murlawirrapurka). These closures support the operation of the Garden of Unearthly Delights and Gluttony and will remain in place until late March.
- Botanic Park (Tainmuntilla): Following the final performances of WOMADelaide on Monday night, site deconstruction and heavy vehicle activity are expected throughout Tuesday. Pedestrians are advised to follow signage and avoid restricted work zones during the pack-down phase.
- Public Transport: Adelaide Metro continues to operate modified routes near festival hubs. Commuters are encouraged to use the Botanic Gardens tram stop and check for minor bus detours on Frome Road.
Adelaide Festival Program
The 2026 Adelaide Festival continues its daily schedule through Sunday, 15 March. On Tuesday, 10 March, several high-profile performances are scheduled across the Riverbank Precinct, including productions at the Festival Theatre and Space Theatre. Expect increased pedestrian density on North Terrace and King William Road during the late afternoon and evening hours.
